A Quick Preview of the Voting Tool for Ignite II on June 24 @ Ceilis

Posted on 10 June 2010 by IgniteBC

This is a quick example of the live polling tool that we will be implementing in the next Ignite Event on June 24th. It is a real time polling and voting tool where you can send in your votes using your cell phone to either Twitter, or text message. Give it a try! You can text a KEYWORD vote to “32075″, or alternately you can Twitter your vote using the following format: @IgniteBC KEYWORD. Just substitute the topic keyword into the Twitter post. For example, if you want to vote for the first presention, just Twitter @IgniteBC GRINGO. The results will be posted immediately on this page in real time. Try it, it’s cool!

For more information and tickets to this event, visit http://IgniteBC2.Eventbrite.com, or join the meetup group at http://www.Meetup.com/IgniteBC

See you there!

June 24th – A Sneak Peak At What’s In Store

Posted on 01 May 2010 by IgniteBC

The second installment of Ignite in Vancouver. We already have an amazing lineup for this one! Here’s just a teaser of what you can expect from us on June 24th:

  • A reality show type contest where the audience will vote via Twitter and TXT msg on their favorite presenters. Everyone can vote for each presenter equally, but the person with the most votes from everyone will win $500!
  • A tongue twister contest: read as much as you can in ten seconds. Make no mistakes and you win a prize!

A lineup of presentations that range from funny to eclectic to scientific! Here’s a quick overview of just some of the people preparing to present at Ignite 2.0:

  • Kerry Ward: Without Adventure, You Are DEAD — At the root of all business and personal success lies one thing: Adventure. It comes naturally for kids, not so much for adults. Adults have to consciously cultivate a Daily Adventure Practice in order to stay alive and grow. Businesses must literally add ventures in order to succeed. This talk will take an energetic and humorous approach to this VITAL issue.
  • James Karg : Everything I needed to know I learned from Video games — A game
designer takes a diffrent look at life and draws parallels to his profession and the real life game. James addresses things like playing cooperatively, facing end bosses, taking care of your health, and learning to play a “role”.
  • Matt Ross: Backpacking Central America – As the author of “Short Straws A Gringo’s Perspective of Backpacking
Central America”, Matt will bring an off-the-cuff view from off-the-beaten
path, the lighter side of his experiences in rural Central America during a six-month odyssey.
  • Jill Talbot: The social construction of addiction – This presenter will bring to light some of our conceptions and misconceptions of the true nature of addiction, and how our perceptions and misunderstandings influence the sevices available to those at risk.

… plus six to eight more presenters yet to be confirmed! We still have a number of presenters that missed that last event, and we expect their presence as well. If you plan on being either a speaker, spectator or sponsor, this is one show you won’t want to miss!

Get your tickets through either http://www.meetup.com/IgniteBC/ or through http://IgniteBC2.Eventbrite.com. Additionally, if you are interested in giving a presentation at this event, you can submit your idea through the IgniteBC webpage at http://ignitebc.com/events/the-next-ignite-june-24th/

Finally, since this is a non-profit event, we are always looking for sponsors. They can be cash, or if you want to promote your business by providing services in kind, or just some kind of discount or anything to people in support of Ignite Events in Vancouver, we’d love to hear from you! We will also reciprocate in kind, and will do whatever we can to direct our audience to your enterprise. For those giving cash donations, we offer the following:

  • Gold sponsor - Gets you a table at the event, with lots of logo placement in programs, and splash screens in presentations, etc.
  • Silver Sponsor - You get four tickets plus mentions in the website, program, etc
  • Bronze Sponsor - Two tickets plus mentions in the website, etc.

June 24 – Another Try for a Contest!

Posted on 25 April 2010 by IgniteBC

Okay, so the last contest didn’t really happen.  Sorry about that, and believe me I was thoroughly disappointed that it don’t go off as planned.  Not a lot of people got there early enough, and… well… better luck next time.

Well, the next time has been planned, and this contest will be something that EVERYONE can participate in, if they are so inclined.  Here’s a quick overview of what we have planned:

Given that Ignite Events are all about public speaking, we’re going to have a challenge that is somewhat consistent to the overall program – that is, we will give all contestants a passage to read up on stage.  The passage will be exactly the same for everyone.  The person that can read the most number of words – without making a mistake in ten seconds – will win a prize.

But, there’s a catch:  (ah yes… there is ALWAYS a catch, isn’t there?)

The passage that you will read will be a very complex and difficult tongue twister.

Good thing we’re doing this at the beginning of the night, eh?

Following the results of April 15th

Posted on 25 April 2010 by IgniteBC

Some folks might be interested to know about the results of the April 15th event, and so here we go:

This was a startup event, and as such, demanded a few additional funds to get things rolling.  The net result is that we lost about $500 from the overall proceeds, with the bulk of the revenues going to simple things like printing the stationery, localized Google advertising, signage, Meetup.com membership fees, Eventbrite and Paypal service fees, web hosting, a cash box, a battery pack, a high speed SD card for the camera, and some software to support the video capture and archiving component.  We already had some things like the camera, a tripod and so on – so these assets were not included in the startup costs.

Despite the loss position, we still donated $100 to Union Gospel Mission, as we set out on this project with a commitment to donate a minimum of $100 or 10% of the proceeds, whichever is greater.  We would have done more, but that’s where we came in.

Thanks to all for your strong support, and we look forward to having you all come out again at all of the future events!
